A Probabilistic Model of Ancient Egyptian Writing

This article investigates a probabilistic model to describe how signs form words in Ancient Egyptian writing. This applies to both hieroglyphic and hieratic texts. The model uses an intermediate layer of sign functions. Experiments are concerned with finding the most likely sequence of sign functions that relates a given sequence of signs and a given sequence of phonemes.

Logic for Mathematical Writing

In the School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary in the University of London we have been running a module that teaches the students to write good mathematical English. The module is for second-year undergraduates and has been running for three years. It is based on logic, but the logic—though mathematically precise—is informal and doesn’t use logical symbols. Some theory of definitions is ...

Ascetic convolutional codes

Ascetic convolutional codes contain fewer edge labels than other convolutional codes. This is advantageous in several practical situations. Selecting an ascetic code over a non-ascetic code carries no severe penalty, in terms of trade-off of minimum distance, code rate and complexity.

Ancient Indian Logic and Analogy

B.K.Matilal, and earlier J.F.Staal, have suggested a reading of the ‘Nyāya five limb schema’ (also sometimes referred to as the Indian Schema or Hindu Syllogism) from Gotama’s Nyāya-Sūtra in terms of a binary occurrence relation. In this paper we provide a rational justification of a version of this reading as Analogical Reasoning within the framework of Polyadic Pure Inductive Logic.
